The train pulled into Jaisalmer at dawn and the fort was just… there, rising out of the desert like a sandcastle someone forgot to finish. I dropped my bag at a guesthouse inside the fort walls — yes, people actually live inside this 12th-century fort, all 4,000 of them — and spent day one getting gloriously lost in its lanes. Cannon-ball houses, Jain temples with carvings so fine they look like lace, and a sunset point where the whole golden city glows.
Day two was the desert. The shared jeep bumped 40 km to Sam, and I’ll be honest: the dunes at sunset, with the camel caravan silhouettes, is a cliché because it’s magnificent. The camp was basic — a tent, a cot, a folk dancer and a cook who made the best gatte ki sabzi of my trip. I skipped the “cultural program” upsells and just lay on a dune watching stars I’d forgotten existed.
Day three I slowed down: the Jain temples properly this time, kachoris at a 60-year-old shop, and a final sunset from the fort walls. Jaisalmer rewards the unhurried. Three days, and I left feeling I’d barely scratched its golden surface. The train home was full of desert dust and happy exhaustion.

Sam is touristy but the sunset is genuinely great. Khuri is quieter — do Sam for the classic experience, Khuri if you want solitude.
