Diu was my pick for our family’s December break because it promised beaches without Goa’s prices or crowds — and it delivered. The train to Veraval was long, I’ll be honest, but sleeper berths with kids are an adventure in themselves, and they slept through most of it. From Veraval the bus to Diu took about two hours along a pretty coastal road. The kids pressed their faces to the windows the whole way, spotting salt pans and fishing villages.
The island is small enough that we never needed a car. Diu Fort was the highlight — massive old Portuguese walls, a lighthouse, and views over the sea on three sides. My kids spent two hours just running along the ramparts. Nagoa Beach the next day was perfect: gentle waves, clean sand, and shacks selling fresh coconut water for ₹40.
What I loved most was the pace. Diu shuts down early, the streets are quiet, and there’s none of the party noise you get in bigger beach towns. It felt safe and unhurried — exactly what a family trip should be. On our last evening we walked the sea-facing promenade as the fishing boats came in, and my daughter declared Diu “better than Goa” — high praise from a ten-year-old.

December is peak season, so I booked the hotel three weeks ahead and got the room for ₹800/night instead of the ₹1,200 walk-in rate. Also, eating at the local thali places near the market cost half of what the beachfront restaurants charged.

What actually saved money? Booking the hotel early. December walk-in rates in Diu are steep; advance booking saved us nearly ₹1,200.
What wasn’t worth saving money on? The train class. We briefly considered unreserved to save ₹400 and I’m so glad we didn’t — 22 hours unreserved with kids would have been miserable.
Biggest mistake? Not carrying swim gear for the kids on day one. We lost half a beach day buying overpriced shorts in the market.
Biggest surprise? How good the food was. I expected tourist-trap prices, but the local restaurants were genuinely cheap and excellent.
Would I do this route again? Yes, but I’d try to find a shorter train connection — the 22-hour leg was the only tiring part.

Is Diu good for a family with small kids? How are the beaches?
Very good. Nagoa Beach has shallow, calm water — my kids played safely for hours. The town beaches are rockier, so stick to Nagoa for swimming.
How did you manage the long train with kids?
Sleeper berths, lots of snacks, and a couple of storybooks. They actually loved the train. Just carry your own bedding for comfort.
