Carpathian Mountains: Best Time to Visit

The Carpathians arc across Romania in three great sections, forming one of Europe’s last large wildernesses. Brown bears, wolves, and lynx still roam forests that blanket the valleys, while the high ridges of the Fagaras, Piatra Craiului, and Bucegi ranges offer serious mountain walking. It is a region where castles and shepherds’ huts sit a day’s walk apart, and where the mountains still feel genuinely wild.

Why go

The Fagaras ridge is the big-ticket traverse: a multi-day hut-to-hut walk along Romania’s highest crest, past Moldoveanu and Negoiu, the country’s two highest peaks. Piatra Craiului is a dramatic limestone knife-edge with superb one-day ridge walks. The Bucegi mountains, close to Brasov, give easy access to high trails and cave walks. Brasov, Sibiu, and Sinaia are excellent bases with castles and old towns nearby.

Best time to visit

Summer, roughly July to early September, is the main season for high ridges, when the snow has generally cleared and mountain refuges are open. Spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable times for lower trails and valley walks, with autumn colour in the forests a highlight. Winter brings good skiing and snowshoeing in the established resorts. As always, check conditions locally before finalising plans.

Getting around

Bucharest’s airports give international access, with trains linking the capital to Brasov, Sibiu, and Sinaia in a few hours. Trailheads often need a car or a local taxi, as public transport into the mountains is limited; hiring a car gives the most flexibility for the Fagaras and Apuseni areas. The Transfagarasan road is one of Europe’s great mountain drives but is generally open only in summer months. Shared minibuses connect some valley towns in season.

Good to know

  • Bear country rules apply: make noise on trails, store food properly at huts and campsites, and never approach wildlife; consider a guided bear-watching trip rather than solo encounters.
  • Mountain refuges vary widely in standard; carry a sleeping bag liner and some cash, and check opening status before setting out.
  • Waymarking uses painted stripes and can be faint in places; carry a detailed map or offline GPS backup.
  • Weather on the high ridges changes quickly, and afternoon storms are common in summer; start early and know your bail-out points.
  • Shepherd dogs (ciobanesti) guard flocks aggressively; give herds a wide berth and wait for the shepherd’s signal before passing.

A week in the Carpathians works well: two or three days around Brasov and the Bucegi or Piatra Craiului, then the Fagaras if you are up for a longer traverse. Check refuge openings, road status, and weather locally before you go, and you will find mountains that still feel like the edge of the wild.
