Visiting Torres del Paine, Chile

Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia is one of the most famous mountain landscapes on the planet: granite towers, milky-blue lakes, hanging glaciers, and the wind-scoured steppe. The classic W trek links its great sights in four to five days, and it sits at the top of many walkers’ lifetime lists. Come prepared for legendary Patagonian weather and you will have the trip of a lifetime.

Why go

The three granite towers that give the park its name are the headline, reached at sunrise on the W trek’s first or last leg. Beyond them, the French Valley’s amphitheatre of peaks and the vast Grey Glacier are equally spectacular. Guanacos graze the steppe, condors ride the thermals, and with luck you may spot a puma. The park’s hut and campsite system makes the W trek achievable for fit walkers without expedition logistics.

Best time to visit

The Patagonian summer, roughly November to March, is the main trekking season, with the longest days and the most reliable weather, though wind and sudden changes are normal even then. Shoulder months can be quieter but colder and less predictable, and many services close in winter. Book huts and campsites far ahead for the peak season, as capacity is limited. As always, check conditions locally before finalising plans.

Getting around

Most visitors arrive via Puerto Natales in Chile or El Calafate in Argentina, then take buses or transfers into the park. The W trek itself is walked hut to hut or campsite to campsite, with your baggage carried on your back. Distances between overnight stops are fixed, so pace yourself to the park’s rhythm. Allow buffer days for weather delays, which are common.

Good to know

  • Patagonian wind is famous for a reason; bring a genuinely windproof shell and secure your tent carefully.
  • Accommodation on the W trek must be reserved in advance; you cannot simply turn up and walk it in peak season.
  • Weather changes in minutes, so carry full waterproofs and warm layers on every single day walk.
  • Park entry rules and trail regulations are strict; follow ranger guidance and stay on marked trails.
  • The sun is strong and the wind dries skin quickly, so protect yourself even on overcast days.

Torres del Paine rewards walkers who respect its weather and walk at its pace. Book early, pack for four seasons in a day, and the towers will do the rest.
