Best time to visit
December to February brings the warmest weather and the longest days, making it the peak season for hiking — and the busiest time for the famous Great Walks, which require booking far ahead. Autumn (March to April) offers settled weather and golden larches. Winter (June to August) is ski season, centred on Queenstown and Wanaka. Spring can be wet and unpredictable. As always, check conditions locally before finalising plans.
Getting around
A rental car or campervan is the classic way to explore, with well-maintained highways connecting Christchurch, Queenstown and the West Coast — Arthur’s Pass and the Haast Pass are scenic highlights in themselves. Intercity buses serve the main towns, and the TranzAlpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth is one of the world’s great rail journeys. Domestic flights link the main centres if you are short on time.
