My Experience
Agatti is the kind of place that looks photoshopped in real life — a thin strip of an island with a turquoise lagoon on one side and open sea on the other. The flight from Kochi is short, and stepping off the plane onto an island runway with the lagoon visible on both sides is a proper travel moment. Permits sound scary but weren’t: my stay operator handled the paperwork once I sent ID copies, and the check at arrival took minutes.
The island is tiny — you can walk end to end — and gloriously quiet. Days were simple: swim in the lagoon in the morning (the water is bath-warm), walk the eastern beach at sunset, eat whatever the kitchen made — always fish curry, rice, and coconut. The glass-bottom boat showed me corals and reef sharks without getting wet; the snorkelling session the next day got me in among them. August had brief rain spells, but they passed in an hour and the lagoon stayed calm. This isn’t a cheap trip by mainland standards — the flight is the price of admission — but the budget-operator route kept it as low as it goes. I left with sand still in my shoes and a promise to return in March for the calmest seas.

Book the flight 6–8 weeks out — last-minute fares on this route can double. And choose a stay with meals included; there are barely any restaurants on the island, and food bills add up fast otherwise.
Reality Check
What actually saved money? Early flight booking and the meals-included stay — the two biggest costs, both tamed. What wasn’t worth saving money on? The permit assistance. Doing the paperwork wrong would have cost me the whole trip. Biggest mistake? Packing only one swimsuit. With daily lagoon swims, nothing dried in the humidity. Biggest surprise? How walkable everything is. I never once needed transport on the island. Would I do this route again? Yes — in March for the calmest seas. Same operator, and I’d add a scuba dive next time.
What I Wish I Knew
- Pack two swimsuits; nothing dries in the island humidity between lagoon swims.
- Get the permit paperwork right the first time — take your operator’s assistance seriously.
- Book flights as early as you can; they are the single biggest cost on this trip.
- Everything on Agatti is walkable; do not pay for island transport you will not need.
