Colosseum: What to See and Do

Colosseum earns its spot on the Italy itinerary for reasons that become obvious within an hour of arriving. The landmark balances the well-known highlights with quieter corners that most visitors walk straight past. Give yourself time for both, and resist the urge to schedule every minute — some of the most memorable moments here tend to be unplanned.

Why go

If you like being active, Colosseum gives you plenty of ways to do it. Walking is often the best way to experience the landmark, and the surrounding area usually offers trails, viewpoints or water-based options depending on the season. You do not need specialist gear for most of it — just reasonable fitness, decent footwear, and a willingness to take the longer, more scenic route.

Best time to visit

Timing matters less than you might think, but Colosseum is generally at its best from spring through autumn. Early summer often combines warm days with manageable crowds, while September frequently brings warm seas and calmer streets. If you visit in the height of summer, plan major sightseeing for mornings and evenings, and treat the hot midday hours as a good excuse for a long lunch.

Getting around

Public transport is typically the easiest way to get around Colosseum. Buses, trams or metro lines usually link the main sights, and day tickets often work out simpler than paying per ride — check what is available when you arrive. Taxis and ride-hailing fill the gaps late at night or for awkward routes. If you are driving in, note that many historic centres restrict cars, so plan parking ahead.

Good to know

  • Check whether your phone plan covers Italy, or pick up a local SIM on arrival.
  • A light rain jacket is worth packing in any season — showers can arrive without much warning.
  • Pack layers even in summer if you are heading into the hills — the weather can turn quickly.
  • Free walking tours are a good orientation on day one; tip your guide if you enjoyed it.

A trip to Colosseum does not need to be complicated to be memorable. Cover the essentials, wander the rest, eat well, and rest when you need to. Do that, and this landmark in Italy will likely give you exactly the break — or the adventure — you came for.
