Getting There
- Nearest railheads: Haridwar/Rishikesh. Buses run to Ukhimath (via Rudraprayag); from Ukhimath take a shared jeep/taxi to Chopta (~30 km).
- By road: Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Ukhimath → Chopta (~220 km, 7–8h). Delhi→Chopta is ~410–450 km, 9–14h.
Typical Budgets
- Backpacker: ₹800–₹1,500/day — budget lodge/camp (₹300–₹1,000/person/night), dhaba meals.
- Mid-range: ₹1,500–₹3,000/day — GMVN rest house (₹1,500–₹2,000), better camps.
Practical Tips
- The trek: Chopta→Tungnath 3.5 km (paved, steep), then 1.5 km more to Chandrashila. Start by 5–6am; up and down takes 4–6h.
- No guide needed in summer/autumn — the trail is obvious. In snow season, hire a local guide.
- Carry cash: no ATMs or UPI at Chopta or on the trail. Pack water and snacks — nothing on the route.
- Tungnath temple is closed in winter (Bhai Dooj to Akshaya Tritiya); the idol shifts to Mukunath at Ukhimath, but the trek stays open.
What I Wish I Knew
- Nights are cold even in May — one extra layer saves you from renting one at inflated prices.
Permits & Notes
- No permits needed for the trek. Drones are restricted in forest zones.
