Getting There

• From Phuentsholing: Coaster buses (~Nu 544 / ~₹544, 4.5–5 hrs) bookable on DrukRide; shared taxis ~₹500–800; private small car ~₹3,800–4,500.
• From Paro: ~1 hr by road; shared taxis run through the day (~₹300–400/seat).
• From Delhi/Kolkata: Fly to Paro, then road to Thimphu.

Typical Budgets

• Budget: ₹3,000–₹4,500/day — guesthouse (~₹1,500–2,200/night), city buses and walking, local restaurants — PLUS SDF ₹1,200/person/night.
• Mid-range: ₹5,500–₹8,000/day — nicer hotel, taxis — PLUS SDF.

Practical Tips

• Thimphu has no traffic lights — the famous white-gloved policemen direct traffic at the main junction. Watch for a bit; it’s oddly moving.
• Tashichho Dzong opens to visitors in the evenings (after office hours); Buddha Dordenma viewpoint is free and best at sunset.
• The weekend Centenary Farmers Market is the best place to eat and people-watch.
• City buses are cheap and reliable — ask your guesthouse for the nearest stop.

What I Wish I Knew

Carry your permit copy everywhere, not just the SDF receipt — checkpoints between districts ask for it.

Permits & Notes

• Same system as Paro: e-permit + prepaid SDF (₹1,200/night for Indians). A guide is required for travel beyond the Thimphu–Paro region.
