Exploring Hangzhou in China

A journey to Hangzhou, China, is the kind of trip that suits almost any travel style. Independent explorers, families, couples, and solo travellers all find something here, whether that is culture, nature, history, or simply a change of scene. The destination is well set up for visitors, but a bit of local knowledge still helps.

Why go

Travellers come to Hangzhou for a mix of reasons, and that is part of its charm. There is the visual appeal, of course: the kind of scenery and streetscapes that make you reach for your camera without thinking. But there is also depth. Layers of history, living traditions, and a food culture shaped by the region give the visit substance beyond the postcard views. You can fill your days with sightseeing, or you can simply wander, sit in a square or by the water, and watch the place go about its day.

Best time to visit

Timing a visit here is mainly about avoiding the extremes. Spring, roughly March to May, is generally lovely, with mild weather and fresh landscapes, while autumn, around September to November, often brings crisp air and clear views. Summer tends to be hot and humid with the possibility of heavy rain, and winter can be starkly cold in northern and inland areas. The shoulder seasons also tend to mean thinner crowds at major sights.

Getting around

Transport in and around Hangzhou follows patterns familiar across the region. Within town, walking is usually the default for sightseeing, supplemented by local buses that residents rely on every day. If you are staying slightly outside the centre, check the bus or tram connections to your accommodation before booking; a well-connected base saves a lot of time. Taxis and ride-hailing services are plentiful in most towns and handy for groups splitting the cost. For travel between destinations, trains are often comfortable and scenic where they run, with buses covering the rest.

Good to know

  • Be patient with queues and processes; a relaxed attitude goes a long way.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes; you will cover more ground on foot than you expect.
  • Keep your phone charged and carry a power bank on long days out.
  • If visiting viewpoints or high areas, go earlier for clearer skies and better light.

However you choose to spend your days in Hangzhou, the essentials are simple: comfortable shoes, an open mind, and time to wander. Do that, and this corner of China tends to take care of the rest. Enjoy the trip.
