How to Reach Accursed Mountains: Routes, Costs & Tips

The Accursed Mountains (Bjeshket e Nemuna, also called the Albanian Alps) form the rugged southern end of the Dinaric range, straddling Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. Sharp limestone peaks, shepherds’ summer settlements, and deep valleys make this one of Europe’s most characterful trekking regions. The classic Theth-to-Valbona walk has put the area on the map, but the range rewards anyone willing to slow down.

Why go

The Theth-to-Valbona trail is the signature experience: a full-day crossing of the Valbona Pass between two spectacular valleys, staying in family guesthouses on both sides. Theth itself, with its stone lock-in tower and the Blue Eye spring, is worth a day or two. Valbona valley offers quieter side trails and river walks. The remoteness is the point: trails pass summer katuns (shepherd hamlets) where cheese and mountain tea are a way of life, and the peaks feel genuinely adventurous without technical climbing.

Best time to visit

Late June to mid-September is the main trekking season, when the Valbona Pass is generally snow-free and guesthouses are open. July and August are busiest on the classic trail; June and September are usually quieter with good conditions. Spring can be very snowy high up, and many guesthouses close from October. As always, check conditions locally before finalising plans.

Getting around

Most visitors arrive via Shkoder, with minibuses to Theth and onward connections toward Valbona. The road to Theth is rough and slow; allow a full day for transfers. Between Theth and Valbona there is no road, so the trail (or a long detour) is the link. Boats across Lake Koman connect the Valbona side to the rest of northern Albania on a famously scenic crossing. Taxis and guesthouse-arranged transfers fill the gaps.

Good to know

  • Book guesthouses ahead in July and August; many are small, and the classic trail’s stages fill up.
  • Carry cash in euros or lek; ATMs are scarce once you leave Shkoder, and most guesthouses take cash only.
  • The Valbona Pass crossing is a long day with significant ascent and descent; start early and carry enough water.
  • Mobile signal is patchy in the valleys; download offline maps and tell your guesthouse your plans.
  • Pack out all rubbish; the valleys are pristine partly because visitors keep them that way.

Allow at least four days: a night or two in Theth, the pass crossing, and time in Valbona, plus the Lake Koman ferry. Check guesthouse availability, minibus schedules, and snow conditions locally before you go, and you will find some of the most memorable walking in the Balkans.
