Most people fly to Guwahati and drive up to Tawang from there. But imagine starting your engine in Hyderabad and not stopping — in spirit — until the Himalayas. One road-trip report describes exactly that: a mega-drive from Hyderabad all the way to Tawang, stitched together across thousands of kilometres and half a dozen states.
The route, leg by leg
The drive followed the east coast north before turning into the Northeast:

Guwahati: the natural breather
Before the mountains, there was the Brahmaputra — wide, calm and humbling in a completely different way from the Himalayan rivers further north. The trip also took in the Kamakhya temple, including the langar meal served there. If you are doing this drive, Guwahati is the obvious place to rest, refuel and slow down before the climb into Arunachal begins.
The one non-negotiable: a high-clearance vehicle
The clearest lesson from the trip was about the car, not the route. Arunachal’s mountain roads are rough, and a low-slung vehicle will suffer. Take something with proper ground clearance — it is the single most practical decision you can make for this drive. Bad roads are part of the adventure; a damaged underbody is not.
A note on timing
This particular drive happened in 2019, and mountain roads, permits and conditions change over the years. Treat it as inspiration and a route sketch, then verify current road status and permit requirements before you set out. The spirit of the trip — go slow, stop often, respect the mountains — never goes out of date.
