Trekking Valbona to Theth, Albanian Alps: A Practical Guide

The Valbona-to-Theth trek is the signature hike of the Albanian Alps — a valley-to-valley traverse through the Accursed Mountains that packs a high mountain pass, shepherd country and two famously hospitable villages into a single big day. It is the hike most visitors to northern Albania build their trip around, and it earns its fame: the scenery at the Valbona Pass rivals anything in the Alps, at a fraction of the cost.

Getting there and away

Shkoder (Shkodër) is the base town. The classic approach is a morning bus from Shkoder to Koman, the ferry across Koman Lake, then an onward bus to Valbona — a full-day journey in itself that doubles as one of the great scenic transfers in the Balkans. After the hike, a direct minibus runs from Theth back to Shkoder in roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. Typical fares are modest: bus legs around €4–9 each, the ferry roughly €9–10, and the Theth–Shkoder minibus about €10–15. Most walkers spend a night in Valbona before the hike and a night in Theth after it, making this a three-day trip from Shkoder.

The hike itself

The trail is about 17 kilometres and takes most hikers 6 to 8 hours, crossing the Valbona Pass at roughly 1,795 metres. Walking from Valbona to Theth is the recommended direction: the ascent is more gradual, and Theth — with its stone tower, waterfalls and guesthouses — is the nicer place to finish and linger. The route is well marked with red-and-white blazes and is straightforward to follow in clear weather.

Difficulty is moderate to challenging. The climb to the pass is steady, but there are steep, exposed sections and loose scree near the top, with sheer drop-offs in places that demand attention rather than fear. The descent into Theth is long on tired legs, so pace yourself on the climb and save energy and water for the way down. Water supply along the trail is inconsistent in high summer, so carry plenty from Valbona — a couple of litres per person is a sensible minimum. Start early to get the exposed sections done before midday heat, and note that trailside cafés may not open before around 9 am — do not count on them for an early coffee.

After the pass: Theth

Theth rewards walkers who stay more than one night. After the effort of the pass, a rest day in the village — wandering between stone houses, eating long guesthouse dinners, letting your legs recover — is time well spent, and onward transport is easy whenever you are ready: the direct minibus back to Shkoder takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. If you are continuing through the Albanian Alps, Theth also works as a base for shorter valley walks before you move on. Whatever your plan, settle any cash needs in Shkoder before you head into the mountains, and keep enough euros in hand for the minibus fare home.

Costs and practicalities

This is one of Europe’s great budget treks. All-in three-day packages from Shkoder, covering transport and two nights, run roughly €70–100 per person. Guesthouse dinners cost about €10–12 per person, rooms range from roughly $30–60 a night depending on whether you take a dorm bed or a private room, and breakfast is often included in the room rate. Bring cash: there are no ATMs in Valbona or Theth, and while euros are widely accepted, card payments are essentially nonexistent.

Season and guides

The season runs from June to October, with June and September the sweet spots — cooler walking, fewer crowds, and guesthouses fully open. July and August are the hottest and busiest months. Snow can linger into May and return in late autumn, so this is not a winter route. No permit is required and no guide is needed; the trail is well marked and solo hiking is common in season when the path is busy. That said, the terrain is remote with loose-rock sections, so pairing up with other walkers is sensible, especially outside the busiest weeks.
