Visiting the Écrins National Park, France

The Écrins massif, straddling the Hautes-Alpes and Isère departments, is the most rugged and least tamed of France’s great Alpine parks. Centred on the Barre des Écrins at 4,102 metres, the highest peak in France outside the Mont Blanc massif, it is a fortress of granite and ice: more than a hundred summits above 3,000 metres, long glaciers and deep, wild valleys. This is not gentle walking country at its highest levels, but for experienced mountaineers and ambitious trekkers, the Écrins are magnificent.

Why go

The Écrins offer high-Alpine seriousness without the crowds of Chamonix. The standard routes on the Barre des Écrins, the Dôme de Neige and La Meije draw climbers from across Europe, while the valleys below hold superb trekking. The GR54 circuits the massif on a demanding multi-day walk through some of the wildest scenery in the Alps. La Grave, on the park’s northern edge, is legendary among steep skiers, and villages like Vallouise and La Bérarde are classic mountaineering bases.

Best time to visit

Summer, generally late June to mid-September, is the season for high routes, when glaciers are usually in condition and refuges are staffed. July and August are the busiest months on the classic climbs. The valleys are pleasant from May, with wildflowers at their best in June and July. Winter brings serious ski mountaineering for specialists. As always, check conditions locally before finalising plans.

Getting around

Grenoble is the main gateway for the northern side, with rail and road links to Bourg d’Oisans and La Grave, while the southern valleys are reached from Gap and Briançon. Public transport serves the main valleys in summer, but a car helps considerably for reaching trailheads. The high mountains are accessed on foot from valley villages, with guarded refuges supporting multi-day tours. Glacier travel here is real mountaineering, not hiking.

Good to know

  • Much of the high Écrins is glaciated. Rope, crampons and an ice axe are essential above the snowline; go with a qualified guide unless fully competent.
  • Refuges on popular routes fill quickly in summer. Book beds well ahead, and carry cash as a backup as payment options vary.
  • Weather windows at 4,000 metres are short. Build flexible days into your plan and be ready to wait out storms in the valley.
  • The park’s central zone is strictly protected: stay on marked routes, respect wildlife areas and leave no trace.
  • Ascend gradually, stay hydrated and know the symptoms of altitude sickness before committing to a high camp.

The Écrins are not the Alps at their easiest, but they may be the Alps at their most authentic: serious mountains for serious mountain people.
