Visiting the Kaçkar Mountains, Turkey

The Kaçkar Mountains rise abruptly behind Turkey’s Black Sea coast, a wall of glaciated peaks topping out at 3,937 metres, draped on their northern flanks in some of the wettest, greenest forest in the country. This is the land of the yayla: high summer pastures where Hemshin and Laz villagers move with their cattle each summer, living in wooden houses scattered across flower-filled meadows. For trekkers, the Kaçkars combine genuine alpine climbing, village-to-village walking and one of Turkey’s most distinctive mountain cultures.

Why go

The range’s variety is its magic. Below, misty valleys hold tea gardens and medieval stone bridges; above, trails climb through rhododendron thickets to glacial lakes like Deniz Gölü and high passes between sharp granite peaks. The yayla villages themselves, with their wooden architecture and warm hospitality, are as much the attraction as the summits. The area around Ayder makes a fine base for shorter walks, while multi-day treks link pastures across the heart of the range.

Best time to visit

July to September is generally the main trekking season, when the high passes are usually snow-free and the yaylas are alive with villagers and livestock. June is beautiful and green but can still hold snow on the highest routes. Winter brings heavy snow and turns the range into a serious ski-touring destination for experienced parties.

Getting around

Most visitors fly into Trabzon on the Black Sea coast, then travel inland by bus or hired car to Rize and up into the mountains via Çamlıhemşin. Minibuses serve the main villages in summer, though services thin out beyond the larger settlements. Trails between yaylas are generally well worn by centuries of herders, and local guides are available in the main villages for the higher routes.

Good to know

  • Pack serious rain gear. The Kaçkars are famously wet, and storms can arrive fast even in midsummer.
  • Shepherd dogs guard flocks on the yaylas. Give them space, avoid walking through flocks, and ask villagers for advice on routes.
  • Rivers can run high after rain. Check stream crossings locally before committing to remote valley routes.
  • Accommodation ranges from village pensions to camping on the pastures. Carry a tent and warm sleeping bag if you plan multi-day traverses.
  • Learn a few words of Turkish. English is limited in the high villages, and even basic phrases open doors.

The Kaçkars are Turkey’s great green mountains: mist, meadows, glaciers and a pastoral culture unlike anywhere else in the country. Go in high summer, pack for rain, and walk from yayla to yayla at the herders’ unhurried pace.
