Visiting Mardi Himal, Nepal

Mardi Himal is one of Nepal’s best short treks, a ridge route climbing toward the base of Mardi Himal below the famous fishtail peak of Machhapuchhre. From high points along the narrow ridge, the panorama sweeps across the Annapurna Sanctuary, with Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre itself dominating the skyline. The trail is walked as a teahouse trek of four to six days, making it ideal for travellers short on time who still want a genuine high-mountain experience.

Why go

The trek punches far above its length. Ridge walking gives almost continuous mountain views once you clear the forest, and sunrise from the high camp area toward Machhapuchhre is genuinely memorable. The forests of rhododendron and oak on the lower trail are lovely in spring, and the small, friendly teahouses keep logistics simple. It is also far quieter than the neighbouring Annapurna routes.

Best time to visit

October and November generally deliver the clearest views and the most stable weather. March and April bring rhododendron blooms and warming temperatures, though haze can soften distant views. The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings cloud and rain. Winter trekking is possible, but snow can cover the trail near the high camp.

Getting around

The trek begins in Pokhara, reached by air or road from Kathmandu. From Pokhara, local transport reaches the roadheads at Kande or Siding, where the trail starts. The route is walked in stages of four to six days, overnighting in teahouses, and is often combined with a few rest days in Pokhara. Entry to the area generally requires conservation-area permits, so confirm current requirements before you travel.

Good to know

  • The high camp sits at around 4,500 metres, so pace yourself even on this short trek and watch for altitude symptoms.
  • The ridge is exposed, so pack windproof layers; weather can change within an hour.
  • Mornings usually offer the clearest views, so set off early from camp.
  • Carry enough cash in Nepali rupees; teahouses on the trail do not take cards.
  • Bring a warm sleeping bag outside the warmest months, as teahouse rooms are simple.

Mardi Himal proves you do not need three weeks for big Himalayan views. Trek in autumn or spring and walk the ridge slowly.
