The Mercantour, tucked into France’s far south-eastern corner where the Alps tumble toward the Mediterranean, is one of the country’s most distinctive national parks. Created in 1979 along the Italian border, it packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a compact area: high granite peaks, deep forested valleys, alpine lakes and slopes where you can walk from Mediterranean scrub to high mountain terrain in a single day. It is wilder and quieter than the northern Alpine parks, with a character all its own.

The park’s most famous treasure is the Vallée des Merveilles, the Valley of Marvels, where tens of thousands of Bronze Age rock engravings cover the glaciated slabs around Mont Bégo: horned figures, daggers and mysterious symbols carved some four thousand years ago. Beyond the archaeology, the Mercantour is superb walking country. The Cime du Gélas, at 3,143 metres the park’s highest summit, presides over a chain of jewel-like lakes, and the return of the wolf to these valleys made the park a symbol of wild nature’s comeback in Europe.
Best time to visit
The lower valleys are walkable from spring, generally May onwards, while the high routes are usually at their best from late June to September, when the passes are clear and the refuges open. The Mediterranean influence brings warmth but also sudden storms. October often offers fine, clear days with autumn colour in the larch forests. As always, check conditions locally before finalising plans.
Getting around
Nice is the natural gateway, with its international airport and rail connections. From there, buses and seasonal shuttles serve the main valleys, including the Vésubie, the Tinée and the Roya, though services thin out in the shoulder seasons. A car makes it far easier to reach trailheads and hop between valleys. Waymarked trails link the valleys, and staffed refuges support multi-day walks, including routes that cross into Italy.
Good to know
- Access to the Vallée des Merveilles engraving sites is regulated; visits are generally made with an authorised guide, so arrange this in advance.
- The park’s central zone is strictly protected: stay on marked paths, do not disturb wildlife and carry out all rubbish.
- Mediterranean storms can arrive fast in summer. Start high walks early and be off exposed ridges by the afternoon.
- Book refuges ahead in July and August, especially on popular multi-day routes.
- This is wolf country. Encounters are rare and the animals avoid people, but respect grazing areas and keep your distance from livestock guardian dogs.
The Mercantour offers something the northern Alps cannot: ancient art, southern light and genuine wilderness within reach of the Riviera.
