Mount Fitz Roy, at 3,405 metres, is the jagged granite spire that defines northern Los Glaciares National Park in Argentine Patagonia. Its sheer east face and the famous silhouette of the surrounding peaks have made it one of the most photographed mountains on earth. The trailhead town of El Chaltén sits almost directly beneath it, and the classic trek to Laguna de los Tres brings hikers to a glacial lake at the very foot of the spire.

Best time to visit
The Patagonian summer, roughly October to March, is the hiking season, with the longest days and the most stable weather. Even then, strong winds, sudden storms and temperature swings are normal; the shoulder months of October and April are quieter but colder and more unsettled. Winter brings snow and very short days, and many services in El Chaltén close or reduce hours.
Getting around
El Chaltén is reached by road from El Calafate, which has the nearest airport. The town is small and walkable, and nearly every major trail starts directly from its edge, so no car is needed for the classic hikes. Longer routes and glacier viewpoints are accessed on foot. Buses connect El Chaltén with El Calafate year-round, with more frequent services in summer.

- Patagonian weather changes in minutes. Carry full rain and wind protection on every hike, whatever the morning looks like.
- Winds can be extreme, especially on exposed ridges. Check the local forecast and be ready to turn back.
- Park entry rules and trail registrations can change. Check current requirements at the visitor centre in El Chaltén before heading out.
- Water from mountain streams is generally considered safe to drink, but carry enough for hot, windy days when you drink more than expected.
- Book accommodation well ahead for December through February. El Chaltén is small and fills up in high summer.
