Mount Ushba, the twin-summited giant of the Georgian Caucasus, rises to 4,710 metres above the Svaneti region in the country’s northwest. Its distinctive double peak, split by a deep notch, makes it one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the range, and mountaineers speak of it in the same breath as the Matterhorn. Most visitors experience Ushba on foot rather than on rope: the trek from the village of Mazeri to the Ushba glacier viewpoint is one of Georgia’s classic multi-day walks.
Why go
For trekkers, the reward is proximity to a genuinely fearsome mountain without needing to climb it. The Mazeri route climbs through flower-filled alpine meadows to a viewpoint directly beneath Ushba’s towering north face, where glaciers spill between great rock buttresses. Svaneti itself is half the attraction: Mestia and the villages of Upper Svaneti are famous for their medieval stone defensive towers, and the region’s distinct culture, polyphonic singing and hearty cuisine give every walk a strong sense of place.
Best time to visit
The high trails are generally clear of snow from late June to September, with July and August the most reliable months for clear views. June can still hold snow on the higher sections, and by October the weather turns unsettled with shortening days. Spring and late autumn suit lower-level walks around Mestia and the villages. Winter buries the region in deep snow, when it belongs to ski tourers rather than trekkers.
Getting around
Most travellers reach Svaneti from Tbilisi by road to Mestia, the region’s main town; the journey is long, so many break it up or travel overnight, and small domestic flights to Mestia operate when conditions allow. From Mestia, local taxis and arranged transfers serve trailhead villages such as Mazeri. On the trails you walk out and back or link villages on foot; main routes are waymarked, but hiring a local guide is wise for glacier approaches.

- Ushba itself is a serious technical climb with a formidable reputation; leave the summit to experienced alpinists with a qualified guide.
- The Mazeri to Ushba glacier trek usually takes two to three days round trip; accommodation along the way is simple guesthouses or camping.
