Visiting Pirin National Park, Bulgaria

Pirin National Park protects one of the Balkans’ most spectacular mountain ranges: a compact chain of marble and granite peaks in southwestern Bulgaria, crowned by Vihren at 2,914 metres. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park holds more than a hundred glacial lakes, ancient Bosnian pine forests and high alpine meadows bright with edelweiss. Why go

Vihren is the classic objective: a superb day ascent from the Vihren hut over marble slabs and ridges, with views across the whole of southwestern Bulgaria. The park’s deeper corners reward multi-day walkers, with trails linking remote lakes like Tevno Ezero beneath the jagged Koncheto ridge. Wildlife includes brown bears, wolves and wallcreepers on the crags, while the ancient pines of the Bayuvi Dupki reserve are among the oldest trees in the Balkans.

Best time to visit

July to September is generally the main walking season, when the high trails are snow-free and the mountain huts are fully open. August is the busiest month, especially around Vihren. June can be beautiful but may still hold snow on north-facing slopes. Winter turns Bansko into Bulgaria’s best-known ski resort, and the high park becomes a ski-touring arena for experienced parties. As always, check conditions locally before committing to high routes.

Getting around

Sofia is the gateway, with regular buses running south to Bansko, the main base town at the foot of the range. From Bansko, roads climb to key trailheads like the Vihren hut area. The park’s hut network serves the main routes and generally needs booking in peak season; many walkers base themselves in Bansko and do day trips, while longer traverses link huts across the range. Trails are waymarked, with the classic routes well trodden.

Good to know

• Start the Vihren ascent early. Afternoon storms are common in summer, and the exposed upper ridge is no place to be in lightning.
• Book huts ahead in August. Beds in the popular huts fill quickly, so secure your nights before you travel.
• The marble rock can be slippery when wet. Wear boots with good grip and take care on the polished slabs.
• Park rules protect a fragile environment. Camp only where permitted, carry out all rubbish and stay on marked trails.
• Bears live in the park but avoid people. Make noise on quiet trails and store food properly at huts and camps.
