The Fann Mountains, in western Tajikistan’s Pamir-Alay range, are one of Central Asia’s most beautiful trekking areas: a compact knot of jagged peaks, glaciers and startlingly turquoise lakes. Highlights include Iskanderkul, a large mountain lake ringed by cliffs, and the chains of smaller lakes at Alaudin, Kulikalon and Haftkul, each a different shade of blue and green. With the highest summit, Chimtarga, reaching 5,489 metres, the Fanns pack serious alpine scenery into a relatively small area.
Why go
The Fanns offer classic high-mountain trekking with far fewer visitors than the Alps or the Himalaya. Trails link one lake basin to the next over passes around 3,500 to 4,500 metres, through juniper forest and flower-filled meadows. The lakes themselves are the stars: perfectly still, brilliantly coloured, and often with not another trekker in sight.
Best time to visit
July to September is the main trekking season, when the high passes are clear of snow and the weather is most stable. June can still hold snow on the higher passes. October brings cold and the first snowfalls. The season is short, so plan accordingly.
Getting around
Most treks start from Panjakent, reached by road from Dushanbe or from Samarkand in Uzbekistan. From Panjakent, rough roads lead to trailheads near Artuch, Alaudin lake or the Seven Lakes valley. Routes are typically walked as multi-day camping treks of five to ten days, though some homestays exist in the valleys. Local guides and drivers are arranged in Panjakent. Confirm current visa and border requirements before you travel.
Good to know
- Passes reach 3,500 to 4,500 metres, so allow time to acclimatise and pace yourself.
- Much of the trekking here is camping-based, so bring full kit or arrange equipment locally.
- Stream water is plentiful but should always be purified before drinking.
- Snow can linger on high passes into July, so check current conditions before you go.
- Carry enough cash in somoni; there are few facilities once you leave the valleys.
