Visiting the Rolwaling Valley, Nepal

The Rolwaling Valley is one of Nepal’s wildest trekking destinations, a narrow glacial valley squeezed between the Langtang and Everest regions. Its centrepiece is Tsho Rolpa, a vast glacial lake at around 4,580 metres ringed by ice-clad peaks, one of the largest such lakes in the Himalaya. Villages like Beding and Na hold a strong Sherpa culture, while the surrounding summits have drawn serious mountaineers for decades. This is not a beginner’s trek: facilities are basic and the valley is remote, but the sense of wilderness is unmatched.

Why go

Rolwaling’s appeal is raw remoteness. You can walk for days seeing few other trekkers, through forests of rhododendron and juniper into a high glacial world. Tsho Rolpa’s milky waters, the hanging glaciers above it and the dramatic country around the Tesi Lapcha pass make for some of the most striking mountain scenery in Nepal. For experienced trekkers who have walked the classic routes, it feels like a step into a wilder Himalaya.

Best time to visit

October and November generally bring the clearest skies. March and April are the second choice, though the higher trails can still hold snow. The monsoon months bring heavy rain to the lower valley and leeches on the forest trails. Winter is harsh, and the route to Tsho Rolpa is usually snowbound.

Getting around

The trek usually starts with a drive from Kathmandu to the roadhead near Dolakha or Jagat, from where the trail follows the Rolwaling river upstream. The route is walked in stages over roughly two weeks, overnighting in basic teahouses at Beding, Na and beyond. Above Na, settlements are sparse and most trekkers travel with an organised group carrying extra supplies. Check current conditions before you go.

Good to know

  • Tsho Rolpa sits at around 4,580 metres, so allow generous acclimatisation and watch for altitude symptoms.
  • Above the village of Na there are very few facilities, so carry extra food, fuel and warm clothing.
  • There are no ATMs and limited phone coverage, so bring enough cash and tell someone your itinerary.
  • The valley’s glacial terrain can be unstable in bad weather, so turn back early if conditions deteriorate.
  • Pack full rain gear and warm layers whatever the season; weather changes quickly above 4,000 metres.

Rolwaling is for trekkers who value wilderness over comfort. Go in autumn, go prepared, and expect one of Nepal’s great wild valleys.
