Visiting the Siguniang Mountains, China

The Siguniang Mountains, whose name means Four Sisters, rise in Sichuan province a long day’s drive west of Chengdu. The highest of the four, Yaomei Feng, reaches 6,250 metres, but the range is best known to travellers for its three beautiful valleys, Shuangqiao, Changping and Haizi, and for Dafeng, a 5,025-metre summit that fit walkers can climb without technical skills. With Tibetan villages, prayer-flagged passes and a backdrop of sheer granite walls, it is one of China’s most rewarding mountain areas.

Why go

The three valleys each offer something different: Shuangqiao is the most developed, with boardwalks and shuttle access to photogenic viewpoints; Changping is the classic trekking valley, leading toward the base of the high peaks; and Haizi is the quietest, with alpine lakes and wide meadows. The region sits on the edge of giant panda habitat, and the mix of Tibetan culture, colourful prayer flags and dramatic granite scenery gives it a character quite unlike the Alps or Himalaya.

Best time to visit

Late spring, roughly May and June, and autumn, September and October, generally bring the most stable weather and the clearest mountain views. Summer brings rain and cloud, which can hide the peaks for days, while winter is cold and snowy, with some facilities closed. Autumn colours in the valleys are a particular highlight. As always in high mountains, check current conditions before you go.

Getting around

Most visitors travel from Chengdu to the town of Siguniangshan, also called Rilong, by road; the drive takes most of a day through winding mountain roads. From town, local transport and arranged vehicles serve the three valley entrances, and shuttle systems operate within the more developed valleys. The scenic area manages visitor entry and may limit numbers at peak times, so check arrangements locally, especially around holidays.

Good to know

  • Rilong sits above 3,000 metres, so take it easy on your first day and drink plenty of water while you adjust to the altitude.
  • Climbing Dafeng requires an early start, a local guide and good fitness; weather windows can be short, so build in spare days.
  • Carry enough cash in yuan; card acceptance is patchy in town and essentially absent once you are on the trails.
  • This is a Tibetan cultural area; walk clockwise around religious sites, ask before photographing people, and treat monasteries with respect.
  • Temperatures swing widely between sun and shade at altitude, so dress in layers and pack sun protection whatever the season.

The Four Sisters reward travellers who slow down: walk the three valleys, acclimatise well, and save a clear morning for the high viewpoints.
