Vikos Gorge, carved through the limestone of the Vikos–Aoös National Park in northern Greece, is often cited as one of the deepest gorges in the world relative to its width: a stupendous chasm where cliffs rise hundreds of metres from the Voidomatis River far below. The classic walk follows the gorge from the village of Monodendri to Vikos, threading through ancient forest, past springs of startlingly clear water and beneath towering walls of pale rock.
Why go
The gorge delivers drama from the first viewpoint. The famous lookouts of Oxya and Beloi gaze straight down the length of the chasm, while the trail itself passes the springs of the Voidomatis, whose turquoise pools are among the clearest river water in Europe. In spring the slopes are bright with orchids, and griffon vultures often circle above the cliffs. The stone villages at either end, Monodendri and Vikos, with their slate roofs and cobbled lanes, are destinations in their own right.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October are generally the best windows. Spring brings wildflowers, full springs and comfortable walking temperatures; autumn offers clear air and golden colours. July and August are walkable but hot, so start very early and carry extra water. Winter is possible on mild days, but the trail can be slippery and river levels rise after rain.
Getting around
Ioannina is the gateway, with roads climbing into the Zagori villages; Monodendri is the usual starting point. The classic hike is a one-way traverse of around twelve kilometres, so arrange transport at the far end in advance: local taxis can be booked, or some walkers arrange a pickup through their guesthouse. A car gives the most flexibility for combining the hike with the rim viewpoints.
Good to know
- This is a full-day walk with significant ascent and descent. Start early, wear sturdy footwear and allow six to eight hours.
- Carry plenty of water. There are no shops or reliable springs along much of the trail, especially in summer.
- After heavy rain the river can rise and side streams become difficult. Check conditions locally before setting out in unsettled weather.
- The trail is waymarked but rocky and exposed in places. Take care on the descents and keep to the marked path.
- Combine the hike with the rim viewpoints. Oxya and Beloi are short drives from nearby villages and should not be missed.
