How I Did It

  • Stayed in an old-city hostel (~₹700/night) as a “tourist” in my own city; used metro + TSRTC buses everywhere.
  • Did one monument cluster per half-day: Charminar–Chowmahalla–Mecca Masjid, then Golconda, then Salar Jung + Hussain Sagar.
  • Ate where the old city eats: Irani chai, biryani at a no-name joint, nimrah bakery.

My Route

  • 1
    Old city base~₹500
    metro + bus, ~₹500 total
  • 2
Charminar → Chowmahalla → Mecca Masjid
  • 3
Golconda Fort → Salar Jung → Hussain Sagar

My Experience

I’d lived in Hyderabad for years and never climbed Charminar. Doing my own city as a budget tourist was weirdly fun — the hostel dorm was full of backpackers who knew more about the old city than I did. Charminar at 9 AM, before the crowds: the climb is narrow, the view of the lanes below is worth it, and entry is about ₹25. Chowmahalla Palace was the surprise of the trip — grand durbar hall, vintage cars, hardly any crowd, ~₹100. The vintage car collection alone is worth the entry fee.

Golconda took a full afternoon: the climb to the top is steep but the acoustic clap at the entrance still works after 400 years. I finished day three at Salar Jung, which is enormous — pick the Indian galleries if your feet give up, like mine did. Food-wise, the old city runs on chai: Irani cafes charge ₹20–30 for bun-maska and chai that tastes like 1950. My one proper biryani meal was ~₹250 and fed me twice. Three days of playing tourist in my own city cost less than a weekend mall trip used to. I ended the trip with Irani chai at a 70-year-old cafe near Charminar, watching the old city wind down as the lights came on.

Money Saver

Pro Money Saver

Stay in the old city, not HITEC City — hostels are half the price and you’re walking distance from Charminar. And do monuments on weekday mornings; weekends mean queues and surge-priced autos.

Reality Check

What actually saved money? The metro smart card and eating at old-city joints instead of Banjara Hills cafes. What wasn’t worth saving money on? Water. March is hot — I bought chilled bottles instead of hunting for free refills. Biggest mistake? Trying to do Golconda at 2 PM. The fort is an oven at midday; go at 9 AM. Biggest surprise? Chowmahalla Palace. I’d walked past its gate for years and never gone in — it’s beautiful. Would I do this route again? Yes, with out-of-town friends as my excuse. Next time: Ramoji is a separate day and a separate budget.

What I Wish I Knew

  • Do Golconda at 9 am; by afternoon the fort is an oven.
  • Get a metro smart card on day one — it pays for itself within two days.
  • Eat in the old city; the legendary joints cost half of what Banjara Hills cafes charge.
  • In summer, stack indoor sights like Chowmahalla and the museums for the afternoon heat.

Is two days enough for the main sights?

SWSwathi

Two packed days cover Charminar, Chowmahalla, Golconda and Salar Jung. Three days lets you actually enjoy them — I recommend three.

Any tips for a solo woman using public transport?

SWSwathi

The metro is very safe and well-lit. For buses, sit near the front; for autos at night, use an app-based cab instead of hailing one.
