articleMy Experience

Neermahal is Tripura’s answer to Udaipur’s lake palace — a white summer palace sitting right in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake. The boat ride out is short, maybe ten minutes, but the palace growing bigger against the water is a lovely moment. Inside, you get about 45 minutes: arched corridors, a small museum of royal memorabilia, and balconies facing the lake on every side. A guide at the entrance offered a quick history of the Tripura kings for ₹50, and it was money well spent.

December was ideal — the lake was full, the light was soft, and a light breeze came off the water. I went on a weekday, so the shared boat filled slowly and I had time to sit at the jetty watching fishermen. On weekends the boats fill faster, which is actually more convenient. My one tip: eat a proper lunch before the boat, because there isn’t much at the jetty beyond tea stalls — I learned that the hungry way. The tea stall owner told me the lake fills even more after the monsoon, when migratory birds arrive in large numbers. I paired the trip with Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala the same evening, which made it a full royal-Tripura day for almost no money.

Pro Money Saver

Go on a Saturday or Sunday if you can — shared boats fill up faster on weekends, so you won’t wait long or be pushed toward a costly private boat. Carry water; the jetty shops charge extra.

verified_userReality Check

What actually saved money? The public bus and the shared boat — the two biggest costs on this trip, both tiny. What wasn’t worth saving money on? Nothing, honestly — it’s a ₹1,000 day. But don’t skip lunch to save ₹100. Biggest mistake? Reaching the jetty at 3 PM. Boats wind down by late afternoon; go before 2 PM. Biggest surprise? How few tourists there were on a weekday. I had whole corridors of the palace to myself. Would I do this route again? Yes — and I’d add the Tripura Sundari temple at Udaipur the same day. It lines up perfectly.

tips_and_updatesWhat I Wish I Knew

  • Reach the jetty before 2 pm; shared boats thin out in the late afternoon.
  • Pair it with the Tripura Sundari temple at Udaipur — it lines up perfectly on the way back.
  • Carry cash; card machines are rare around Melaghar.
  • Go on a weekday if you can — you may get the palace corridors almost to yourself.

How much time should I keep for the whole trip from Agartala?

SASayan

Keep 6–7 hours total. Bus is ~1.5 hours each way, and the palace visit itself is about an hour including the boat.

DEDev

Is the boat ride safe for kids and elders?

SASayan

Yes, the ride is short and calm — about ten minutes on still water. The palace has stairs though, so elders should take it slow.
