- Stayed 3 nights in a Thimphu guesthouse (~₹1,200/night) and explored the capital by city bus and on foot.

My Experience
There’s a particular thrill in walking across an international border. One moment you’re in Jaigaon’s chaos, the next you’re in Phuentsholing’s order — and the mountains are suddenly, impossibly close. With passport, hotel printout, and prepaid SDF ready, the permit office took under an hour.
The bus next morning was the real journey: 4.5 hours climbing from the plains to 7,600 ft while Hindi film songs played on the driver’s stereo. My guesthouse (₹1,200/night) came with a family who insisted I join their evening tea.
Thimphu as a solo backpacker was a joy — working city buses, Buddha Dordenma at sunset, the weekend market, and those famous white-gloved traffic policemen conducting traffic like an orchestra. The overland route is the backpacker’s way into Bhutan: half the entry cost of flying, twice the adventure.

Money Saver
The overland route is the budget hack for Bhutan: my total entry cost (train + auto + bus) was under ₹2,000 vs ₹25,000+ for a flight. The SDF is fixed whatever you do, so the only variable you control is how you get in — and the bus is both cheapest and most scenic.
Reality Check
Entering overland, guesthouse over hotel, city buses over taxis.
Trying to do the permit office at 4 PM to “save a day” — I saw people turned away as the counter closed. Go before 3 PM, ideally morning.
Not booking the return bus a day ahead. The morning coaster filled up and I had to take a later shared taxi (₹800) instead.
How straightforward the permit process was with documents ready — under an hour, no agent, no fee beyond SDF.
Absolutely — it’s now my recommended first Bhutan trip for budget travelers.
What I Wish I Knew
- Reach the Phuentsholing permit office before 3 PM (mornings are best); carry passport or voter ID + hotel booking confirmation.
- Book DrukRide bus seats a day ahead in season — morning departures fill up.
- Keep your permit copy on you at all times, not just the SDF receipt — district checkpoints ask for it.
- The 24-hour SDF waiver applies only to border towns (Phuentsholing etc.) — once you head to Thimphu, the nightly fee applies.

Can I cross the border with just a voter ID, or do I need a passport?
Voter ID works for Indian nationals at Phuentsholing — that’s the officially accepted document along with a passport. Carry the original, not a photocopy, plus your hotel booking confirmation.
Is the bus journey safe for a solo woman?
I found it completely fine — the coaster buses are proper reserved-seat services, not shared jeeps. I sat near the front, arrived in daylight, and the guesthouse owner even called to check I’d reached. Standard solo precautions, but nothing alarming.
