Getting There
- From Delhi: overnight bus to Baijnath (~11–12 hrs) — HRTC ordinary ~₹823–845, Himdhara ~₹972–1,005, Himsuta Volvo ~₹1,664; private Volvos ~₹760–1,450. Then taxi (~₹300–500) or local bus the last 12 km to Bir.
- Nearest railhead: Pathankot (~140 km, ~4 hrs by bus/taxi). Nearest airport: Kangra (Gaggal), ~65 km.
- From Dharamshala: ~68 km / 2–2.5 hrs by taxi or local bus via Palampur.
Typical Budgets
- Backpacker: ₹1,000–₹2,500/day excluding the flight — hostel/guesthouse ₹500–1,200, dhaba meals ₹600–900.
- Mid-range: ₹3,000–₹5,000/day — cottage ₹1,500–3,500, café meals, one standard tandem (~₹3,000–3,500) + GoPro.
Practical Tips
- Book paragliding 1–2 days ahead in peak bands (Apr–May, Oct–Nov); flying windows are roughly 9–11:30 am and 12–3 pm.
- Fly only with Billing Paragliding Association–registered operators and certified pilots — confirm the price covers transfer, gear and video. Walk away from sub-₹1,500 roadside quotes.
- Carry cash: Bir has 1–2 ATMs that run dry on weekends; the nearest fuel pump is at Baijnath (16 km).
- Skip heavy meals before flying; wear sports shoes and warm layers — Billing sits ~1,000 m above Bir.
- Beyond the flight: Palpung Sherabling and Chokling monasteries, Deer Park Institute, tea gardens, and the Gunehar waterfall (guide ~₹200) are worth 2–3 extra days.
What I Wish I Knew
- Flights are entirely weather-dependent — keep a buffer day rather than scheduling the flight on departure morning. The ₹500–800 GoPro video is worth it; confirm the camera setup with your pilot before launch.
Permits & Notes
- No entry permit. Tandem paragliding: standard 15–20 min flight ~₹2,800–3,500; joy rides ~₹1,600–2,500; age usually 12–60, weight ≤120 kg. Monsoon (mid-Jul–Aug) suspends flying.
