September is the sweet shoulder — monsoon-washed green, building thermals, no October crowds yet. The bus dropped me at Baijnath in the morning; Bir was a short shared-taxi ride past tea gardens.
I booked the flight for day 2 but kept day 3 empty — smartest move. Day 2 dawned cloudy and the pilots called it off by 9 am; day 3 was perfect. The shared jeep climbs 14 km to Billing, and then you just… run off a mountain. The first thirty seconds are pure adrenaline; the rest was the quietest I’ve ever been — just wind and the Kangra valley below. Get the GoPro video — I almost skipped it to save ₹600; now it’s my most-watched clip.
Non-flying days weren’t filler. Palpung Sherabling is worth half a day; the Gunehar waterfall walk with a local guide (~₹200) was the small adventure hostels are made for. Evenings were landing-site sunsets — tiny colourful canopies spiralling down over momos.

tips_and_updatesWhat I Wish I Knew
- Book 1–2 days ahead in peak bands (Apr–May, Oct–Nov) — ramp slots are limited and good-weather windows fill fast.
- Quotes under ~₹1,500 are a red flag: short hop or unregistered pilot. Standard tandem runs ~₹2,800–3,500 for 15–20 minutes.
- Confirm the price includes transfer, gear and video BEFORE paying — and fly only with BPA-registered operators and certified pilots.
- Skip heavy meals before flying; wear sports shoes and warm layers (Billing sits ~1,000 m above Bir).
- No fuel pump in Bir — nearest is Baijnath, 16 km back. Critical if you ride in.

Is paragliding actually safe? I’m nervous about the whole “running off a mountain” part.
I was too. Fly only with a BPA-registered operator and certified pilot; confirm transfer, gear and video are in the price upfront. The cheap roadside quotes are where the risk lives — walk away from anything under ~₹1,500.
Can I do it in a weekend?
3 days minimum, 4 is comfortable — one must be a buffer, because flights cancel on weather. Bus Friday night, fly Saturday, back Sunday works only with cooperative weather — a gamble I wouldn’t take.
