Seeing a one-horned rhino in the wild was on my bucket list for years, and Kaziranga delivered beyond anything I imagined. We took the morning bus from Guwahati — it drops you right at Kohora, the main gate, and our homestay was a ten-minute walk away. The homestay owner greeted us with hot tea and a hand-drawn map of the safari zones, and we could hear forest sounds from the veranda that evening.
The first safari, at dawn in the Central Zone, is something I’ll never forget. Mist hanging over the grasslands, and then the guide whispered “gond” — rhino — and there it was, not twenty metres away, grazing like we weren’t there. We counted eleven rhinos that morning, plus elephants, wild buffalo, and a fish eagle.
The shared jeep was the smartest decision. A private jeep costs ₹4,000+, but our homestay grouped us with four other travellers and we each paid about ₹1,300 including the entry fee and guide. Same forest, same animals, fraction of the price. The second safari in the afternoon was quieter but we saw a rhino calf with its mother, which melted everyone’s hearts. The calf kept peeking at our jeep from behind its mother, and our whole group just sat there grinning like children.

The shared jeep safari is the single biggest saving — ask your homestay or hotel to group you with other guests. Also, March is shoulder season: the grass is shorter after controlled burning, so sightings are great and crowds are thinner than December–January.

What actually saved money? Sharing the jeep. Two safaris for ₹2,600 per person instead of ₹8,000+ for a private jeep.
What wasn’t worth saving money on? The second safari. I almost skipped it to save money, and it gave us the rhino calf sighting — the best moment of the trip.
Biggest mistake? Not carrying a proper warm layer for the 5 am safari. March mornings in an open jeep are freezing.
Biggest surprise? How many rhinos we saw. I expected maybe two or three; we lost count after ten.
Would I do this route again? In a heartbeat. Next time I’d try the Eastern Zone too — it’s less visited and the guides say the birding is excellent.

- Safaris need to be booked a day ahead — your stay can arrange it, or book at the counter.
- The park is closed roughly May–October for monsoon; check before planning.
- Morning safari means a 5 am start — the cold is real, layer up.
- Carry binoculars; the jeeps don’t provide them and birds are half the show.

Is one safari enough, or should I do two?
Do two if you can — morning and afternoon feel like different forests. Our morning was all rhinos; the afternoon gave us elephants and the calf. Worth it.
How do I find people to share a jeep with?
Just ask your homestay or hotel — they group guests together every day in season. We were paired up within an hour of arriving. You can also ask at the safari booking counter.
