I’d done the private-taxi thing before, so this time I had one question: can you do NJP–Gangtok entirely on shared transport without being miserable? Short answer: yes — if you arrive before noon. The stand is unmissable: exit NJP, cross the road, follow the shouting.
I paid ₹400, stashed my 55L pack on the roof rack, and squeezed into the middle row with a family from Siliguri, two college kids, and a monk. By Rangpo we were sharing biscuits. The road is the attraction — the Teesta alongside, tea gardens, then the climb.
For four days I didn’t hire a single private vehicle: Tsomgo on a shared seat (~₹800), Gangtok viewpoints on a shared half-day (~₹400), everything else on foot. Total transport for the whole trip: under ₹2,000. The only real cost of sharing is time — and for a backpacker with flexible days, that’s a trade I’ll make every time.

Never accept the first “full cab” offer from touts inside the station. Walk 50 meters outside, find the actual shared stand, and the price drops from ₹3,500+ to ~₹400. The touts are counting on you not knowing the stand exists.

Do shared cabs run in the evening? My train reaches NJP at 7 PM.
Rarely, and that’s the honest answer. After ~4–5 PM the shared stands thin out fast. For a 7 PM arrival, I’d either stay the night in Siliguri (cheap hotels near the station) or split a private cab with fellow passengers from your coach.
Is it safe to put luggage on the roof?
Yes — they rope it down properly and it doesn’t move. Just keep electronics, documents and valuables in a daypack with you.
