After the beautiful chaos of Gangtok and Pelling trips, we wanted the opposite: a place with no itinerary. Ravangla is that place. Our homestay host, a retired teacher, gave us one piece of advice on arrival: “Don’t plan anything. Walk.” We took him seriously.
Buddha Park at 6:30 AM in December — mist curling around a 130-ft Buddha, maybe ten people in the whole complex — was one of the most peaceful hours of our year. The nominal entry fee felt like the best value in Sikkim. We went back twice.
The walk to Ralong Monastery is the trip’s hidden gem: 6 km of village road, prayer flags, a monastery that sees a fraction of Rumtek’s crowds. We packed lunch from the homestay and ate it on the monastery steps. Temi Tea Garden, Sikkim’s only tea estate, was a half-day shared taxi ride — order the garden’s own tea at the small outlet; it’s excellent and cheap.
What I loved most: travelling as a couple with a solo traveler’s mindset. No driver waiting, no package schedule, just two people figuring out a small town on foot. Our total for four days was under ₹9,500 for two — proof that the quietest trips are often the cheapest.

Skip the private cab entirely. Ravangla’s sights are either walkable (Buddha Park, town) or reachable by cheap shared taxis (Temi, Ralong). A private car for 4 days would have cost ₹12,000+ — we spent ₹1,700 on transport total.

Underestimating December cold — Ravangla at 7,000 ft in December needs proper winter clothing, not “hill station casual.”
How good the homestay food was. Our host’s wife cooked better Sikkimese meals than any Gangtok restaurant we tried.

- Buddha Park at sunrise (before 7 AM) vs midday are two different experiences. Choose sunrise.
- Homestays on Kewzing Road are quieter and more personal than main-road hotels.
- December is crystal-clear but cold (near 0°C at night) — pack accordingly.

Is Ravangla too quiet? We like a little activity in the evenings.
Honest take: evenings are very quiet — a couple of cafes, early nights. If you want nightlife, this isn’t it. But as a 3–4 day reset between busier stops, it’s perfect. We paired it with 2 days in Gangtok after.
How did you book the homestay?
Direct phone booking after finding it on a travel forum — ₹900/night vs ₹1,200+ on apps. For small Sikkim towns, calling directly almost always gets a better rate.
