January is Auli at its most Auli: deep snow, running lifts, cold that makes you earn the evenings. We’d talked about learning to ski for years, so we did it properly — four days, a real instructor, a room where you wake up to Nanda Devi.
The flight-plus-taxi combo sounds extravagant until you do the math on 26 hours of bus travel inside a 4-day trip. We landed in Dehradun by 9am and were in Joshimath by dinner, rested. Day two we rode the ropeway up (₹750–₹1,000 return — still the best 22 minutes in Indian tourism) and checked in as snow started falling.
The ski course was two half-days with a local instructor, gear included in the ~₹2,500. Day one: falling. Day two: actually turning, slowly, down the bunny slope, grinning like idiots. Neither of us became skiers; both of us became people who’ve skied.
Evenings were the quiet luxury: the dining room, hot soup, the slopes going blue outside the window. On the last morning we skipped the lift queue and walked the Gurso ridge in fresh snow.

- January is the coldest month: -5 to -10°C at night is normal. Pack like you mean it.
- Ski schools cluster near the GMVN area — compare 2–3 before signing up; rates are similar but instructors vary.
- Ropeway queues are longest 10am–2pm; ride early or late.
- ATMs are unreliable in Auli — carry cash from Joshimath.

Is the ski course worth it if we’ve never seen snow?
Especially then. The 2-day beginner course assumes zero experience — most of the class had never touched skis. You’ll fall a lot and love it.
Can we do this trip in 3 days instead of 4?
You can, but you’d lose the ski course or the rest day, and the travel days are long. Four days is the minimum I’d recommend.
How do the room prices compare between Auli and Joshimath?
Joshimath is roughly half the price. If budget is tight, stay there and ropeway up daily — but you lose the sunrise-over-the-slopes mornings, half the magic for us.
