The Sundarbans had been on my list forever, and my wife and I finally did it this January — the best season, cool and dry. The group tour picked us up at 6 am, and by 10 we were on a boat gliding through narrow mangrove creeks. There’s something unreal about those dense green walls of mangrove closing in on both sides while the boatman cuts the engine and everything goes silent.
We didn’t see a tiger — almost nobody does on a short trip, and the guide was honest about that upfront. But we saw spotted deer, wild boar, a massive estuarine crocodile sunning on a mudbank, and more kingfishers than I could count. The Dobanki canopy walk, where you walk above the forest on a raised walkway, was the highlight — you’re at eye level with the treetops. My wife filled half her camera’s memory card on birds alone.
The evening at the eco-lodge was lovely: a village walk, local folk songs, and a simple Bengali dinner. Waking up to mist on the water the next morning, before the second safari, felt like being inside a nature documentary. For the price, it was one of the best-value trips we’ve done. We’re already talking about the two-night version next winter.

Is the group tour okay for someone who gets seasick?
The creeks are calm — it’s not open sea, more like wide rivers. I get queasy on boats too and I was completely fine. The bigger boats are very stable.
Did you feel the 1-night tour was too rushed?
Slightly, yes. Two safaris in two days is decent, but everything moves on a schedule. If you have the time and budget, the 2-night version would be more relaxed.
