Getting There

  • From Delhi: Overnight train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), sleeper ~₹800, then shared cab to Gangtok (~₹350–500 per seat, 4–5 hrs).
  • From Kolkata: Overnight train (Darjeeling Mail / Uttarbanga) to NJP, then shared cab as above.
  • From NJP / Bagdogra: Shared cabs leave from outside NJP station and Siliguri stands; private small cars cost ~₹3,500–4,500.

Typical Budgets

  • Backpacker: ₹1,200–₹1,800/day — dorm or budget hotel (~₹800–1,200/night), shared transport, local eateries (~₹300–500/day on food).
  • Mid-range: ₹2,500–₹4,000/day — comfortable hotel, mix of shared and private cabs, one day trip.

Practical Tips

  • Shared cabs fill up with 10 passengers — you may wait 30–60 min. Morning arrivals get seats fastest.
  • Tsomgo Lake / Nathula / North Sikkim permits are arranged by MG Marg travel agents; carry a photo ID and 2 passport photos.
  • Nathula Pass stays closed on Mondays and Tuesdays — plan around it.
  • ATMs exist on MG Marg, but carry cash for shared cabs and small towns.
  • The SNT bus stand has the cheapest onward buses (Pelling, Ravangla, Siliguri).

What I Wish I Knew

Book shared seats for Tsomgo–Nathula a day ahead in peak season (Apr–May, Oct–Nov) — same-day seats sell out fast.

Permits & Notes

  • Indian citizens: no permit needed for Gangtok town; photo ID + photos required for Tsomgo, Nathula, and North Sikkim.
  • Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit, available at entry checkposts.
