There’s something about boarding the Darjeeling Mail at Sealdah that feels like the trip has already started. I woke to North Bengal sliding past the window, and by 9 AM I was at NJP’s shared cab stand — ₹400, no negotiation needed, take it or wait.
The hostel was my best decision. For ₹400 a night I got a bunk, a locker, and instant travel companions — three of us booked the same Tsomgo shared cab the next morning, which solved the solo traveler’s eternal problem of filling shared seats.
Tsomgo in March is unreal: the lake half-frozen, snow on the banks, thin air that slows your walk without you noticing. My last day was deliberately empty — the Tibetology institute, the ropeway, momos on MG Marg. Gangtok is one of the few hill towns where I never felt uneasy walking alone after dark.

The hostel dorm did double duty: it was the cheapest bed in town AND it solved the solo-traveler problem of filling shared cabs. I never once paid for an empty seat because there was always someone at breakfast heading the same way.

Is Gangtok safe for a solo woman traveler? I’m planning my first solo trip.
I felt completely at ease — MG Marg is lively and well-lit till late, and the hostel crowd is friendly. Standard solo precautions apply, but Gangtok is one of the safer hill towns I’ve done alone.
How early should I book the Darjeeling Mail sleeper?
For March (peak season), I booked 3 weeks out and still got an upper berth. Two to four weeks ahead is my rule for this train.
