They call Chitrakote the Niagara of India, and in July — full monsoon — I finally understood why. The Indravati river spreads nearly 300 metres wide and just pours over the cliff in this massive white curtain. The roar hits you before you even see it. I stood at the main viewpoint for an hour, getting soaked by the spray, and I didn’t want to leave.
The overnight bus from Raipur was comfortable enough — I slept most of the way and woke up in Jagdalpur as the town was waking up. The shared auto to the falls was the fun part: packed with locals, everyone chatting, the road getting greener with every kilometre.
I spent the day walking between the viewpoints. The one from the top of the falls, where you watch the water launch off the edge, is the best. There are small boats that go near the base in calmer months, but in July they were stopped for safety — which honestly made the falls feel even wilder. That evening, sitting on my lodge balcony listening to the water, I felt like I’d discovered something most people skip. If you only see one waterfall in your life, make it this one in monsoon — nothing else in India comes close at full flow.

Go in monsoon (July–September) for the fullest falls AND the lowest hotel rates — lodges near Chitrakote drop prices when the rain keeps casual tourists away. The shared autos from Jagdalpur cost a fraction of a private taxi.

What actually saved money? The shared auto from Jagdalpur. A private taxi would have cost ₹1,500+ for the same 40 km; the shared auto was ₹250.
What wasn’t worth saving money on? Rain gear. I bought a cheap ₹100 poncho that tore in an hour. A proper raincoat would have saved the day.
Biggest mistake? Not checking the boat situation before dreaming about it. In monsoon the boats don’t run — I should have planned for viewpoints only.
Biggest surprise? How few tourists there were. A waterfall this spectacular, and I shared the main viewpoint with maybe twenty people.
Would I do this route again? Yes — but I’d add Tirathgarh Falls nearby, which is another hour from Jagdalpur and easy to combine.

Is July a good time, or is the rain too much?
July is THE time for the falls at full power — just accept you’ll get wet and plan viewpoints, not boats. Carry proper rain gear and it’s magical.
Can Chitrakote be done as a day trip from Jagdalpur?
Yes, easily — it’s about 40 km, roughly an hour each way. But staying one night lets you see the falls in evening light, which is worth it.
