articleMy Experience
Kasol town is the lobby, not the destination. I landed, slept one dorm night, and got out — the real Parvati Valley starts where the shared taxis stop. Tosh, an hour above Barshaini, deserved the whole trip.
Tosh at 2,400 m is ridiculous: my room cost ~₹1,000 a night, the balcony view alone worth double. Days were slow — café breakfasts, the waterfall walk, evenings watching the light die. Nights were cold even in May; I slept in everything I brought.
Kheerganga started at 6 am from the Kalga side: 4–5 hours up on clay after rain — trek shoes, not sneakers. The hot spring at the top (~₹400) justified every blister; down by 4 pm, legs destroyed, extremely happy. Last morning in Manikaran was the perfect comedown: free langar, hot springs, nobody selling you anything.

Sleep in Tosh, not Kasol — ~₹1,000/night with a valley-view balcony; May-weekend Kasol rooms cost more for a tenth of it. Manikaran’s free langar + hot springs is a morning of experience for ~₹75 of shared taxi.
verified_userReality Check
Ordinary buses, Tosh over Kasol stays, dhaba meals between café splurges.
Proper trek shoes — I watched a guy slide down half the Kheerganga trail in sneakers; shoes (~₹1,500–3,000) beat a sprained ankle.
Not withdrawing enough cash in Kasol — no ATMs or signal beyond, three days fully offline and cash-only.
Weekend Kasol is bazaar-loud; Tosh an hour uphill is silent.
Yes — 6 days: 3 nights in Tosh, a Kalga stay as Kheerganga base.
tips_and_updatesWhat I Wish I Knew
- Kheerganga camping is banned since July 2024 — day trek it, start by 6 am, back by evening.
- Withdraw cash and download offline maps at Kasol — no signal or ATMs beyond.
- Travel Sunday–Thursday — weekend crowds spike Kasol prices and noise.
- Visiting Malana? No-touch rules carry fines of ~₹2,500–3,500. Stay on the designated path.
- Pack warm layers even in summer — Tosh nights at 2,400 m are cold; a power bank is essential.

Can a beginner do Kheerganga?
Beginner-plus — 4–5 hours up, clear trail with dhabas, so you’re never alone or lost. Two non-negotiables: start by 6 am, and wear proper trek shoes — after rain the trail turns to clay.
Safe for a solo woman? Where did you stay in Tosh?
Felt safe throughout — tiny village where everyone knows everyone; guesthouses are family-run. I stayed near the top (~₹1,000/night); book the first night, then walk around and negotiate once you’ve seen the views.
