navigationHow I Did It

  • check_circleBooked the Delhi–Leh flight 3 weeks out (approx ₹7,000 one-way); took the HRTC bus back? No — flew both ways on advance fares (approx ₹14,000 return total).
  • check_circleTook a MORNING flight — Leh landings only happen in daylight, and afternoon cancellations are common.
  • check_circleDid nothing for the first 48 hours except hydrate, walk slowly, and sort my Inner Line Permit online. This is the whole trip, honestly.
  • check_circleStayed in a budget guesthouse (₹700/night), ate at dhabas (₹400–600/day), and joined shared-taxi monastery circuits (₹300/person/day).
  • check_circleSorted the ILP on day 1 via lahdclehpermit.in — environment fee ₹400 + wildlife ₹20/day + small Red Cross contribution.

articleMy Experience

The flight into Leh is the kind of landing you remember — the plane banks between brown mountains and suddenly there’s a green valley with a town in it. Then the door opens and the air hits you: thin, cold, and very honest about the fact that you’re at 3,500 metres.

Day one: deliberately nothing. Too many trip reports describe people rushing to Khardung La on day two and spending day three with splitting headaches. I hydrated, ate light, skipped the evening beer, and slept ten hours.

Day three I felt human and joined a shared-taxi monastery circuit (₹300/person, six of us): Thiksey in the morning light, Hemis after lunch, entries ₹50–100 each. Thiksey at 7 AM — monks chanting, valley still in shadow — was worth the entire flight.

The rest was slow by design: Shanti Stupa at sunset, apricots from the Leh market, one shared-cab run to Magnetic Hill and Pathar Sahib. Daily burn: under ₹1,500. The flight was the expensive part; everything after landing was backpacker-cheap.

Two things: the advance flight fare (₹7,000 vs ₹11,000+ last-minute — a ₹8,000 swing on a return trip) and the shared-taxi circuits (₹300/person vs ₹2,500+ for a private taxi day). In Leh, never pay for a private vehicle alone if a shared option exists.

verified_userReality Check

savingsWhat actually saved money?

Advance flights and refusing every private taxi in favour of shared ones.

savingsWhat wasn’t worth saving money on?

The rest days. “Saving” a day by rushing to altitude is how you lose three days to AMS instead.

warningBiggest mistake?

Almost booking an afternoon flight because it was ₹800 cheaper. Morning flights to Leh get cancelled far less.

sentiment_very_satisfiedBiggest surprise?

How cheap Leh town itself is once the flight is paid for — ₹1,200–1,500/day is genuinely comfortable.

replayWould I do this route again?

Yes — this is now my template for a first Ladakh trip.

tips_and_updatesWhat I Wish I Knew

  • Carry cash. ATMs in Leh run dry in season and the network is patchy.
  • Pack layers even in July — the day/night swing is 20°C+.
  • The permit (env ₹400 + ₹20/day) covers all beyond-Leh routes, so sort it once on day 1.
  • Hydrate constantly for 48 hours and skip alcohol — altitude doesn’t care how fit you are.

Is 6 days enough, or should I add Nubra/Pangong?

WFounder Author

6 days is perfect for Leh town + monasteries. If you want Nubra and Pangong, make it 9–10 days — you need 2 acclimatization days before that circuit, plus 3–4 days for the circuit itself. Don’t compress it.

PRPriya

Did you feel any AMS symptoms at all?

WFounder Author

Mild headache on the evening of day one, gone by morning after water and sleep. The 48-hour rest rule is the reason. Everyone I met who rushed felt it worse.
