The ECR bus ride is half the pleasure — the road hugs the coast most of the way, and by 10 AM we were checking into our guesthouse, a converted French-era house with a courtyard full of frangipani. White Town on foot is the way to do it: yellow walls, bougainvillea, the old lighthouse, and Rock Beach ten minutes away where the waves hit the rocks properly. A morning walk down Rue Romain Rolland, with its bougainvillea-draped walls, is the prettiest free activity in town.
We rented bicycles on day two and rode the quiet lanes, stopping at a tiny bakery for almond croissants that cost less than a Chennai coffee. Auroville took half a day — the Matrimandir viewing point, the forest trails, and a simple thali at the visitors’ centre. July had short, sharp showers; we got caught in one and drank filter coffee under a shop awning, which is now one of my favourite memories. Evenings were for the beach promenade: no entry fee, sea breeze, dinner at a Tamil meals place for ~₹200 for two. Pondicherry tempts you toward expensive cafes, but the budget version felt richer. We finished with sunrise at Rock Beach on our last morning — just us, the waves, and a fisherman mending his nets.

What actually saved money? The government bus and the bicycle. Transport for two days cost almost nothing. What wasn’t worth saving money on? The guesthouse location. Paying a bit more to stay inside White Town saved us hours of walking. Biggest mistake? Not carrying a rain cover in July. One downpour soaked our day bag. Biggest surprise? How good the cheap Tamil meals places are, two streets behind the fancy cafes. Would I do this route again? Yes — in January for the weather. Same bus, same guesthouse, longer Auroville walk.

Is one night enough for Pondicherry?
One night covers White Town, Rock Beach and a half-day in Auroville if you start early. Two nights is more relaxed — I’d pick two if you can.
How is the monsoon season there in July?
July has short, heavy showers — not all-day rain. Carry a rain cover and plan indoor sights (museums, churches) for the afternoon.
