Let’s be honest first: Bhutan is not a budget destination. The SDF alone — ₹1,200 per person per night for Indians — means a 5-day trip starts with nearly ₹10,000 in fees before you’ve eaten. But “not budget” and “not worth careful spending” are different things.
The flight into Paro is worth the fare alone — the descent between Himalayan peaks is the most dramatic landing I’ve experienced. Tiger’s Nest day: we started at 7:30 AM, entry was Nu 1,000 each (verify current rates — they changed after my trip), and the 5-hour hike ended at a monastery where no phones are allowed. You remember it instead of photographing it.
Thimphu surprised us more: the weekend market, Buddha Dordenma at sunset, a city with no traffic lights. We ate where office workers eat and took city buses for pocket change. Total for two: ~₹88,000. Not cheap — but every rupee accounted for, and I’d spend it again tomorrow.

The SDF — it’s non-negotiable, so budget for it first and plan everything else around what’s left. Also: don’t skip the guide where one is required; fines are real.
Not checking the Tiger’s Nest entry fee revision timeline — I got lucky at the old Nu 1,000 rate in May 2025; it’s Nu 2,000 now (Sept 2026). Always verify before you go.
How affordable daily life is once you’re past flights + SDF. Bhutan’s street-level costs are lower than Delhi’s.

- SDF (₹1,200/night for Indians) must be paid online in advance at bhutan.travel — it’s not payable on arrival.
- E-permit processing takes a few working days; carry passport or voter ID + hotel confirmations.
- A licensed guide is mandatory beyond the Paro–Thimphu region — factor ~₹2,000–3,000/day (splittable).
- Bhutan added 5% GST on tourism services (hotels, guides, transport) from Jan 2026 — my May 2025 costs predate it, so budget slightly higher now.

Is Bhutan really worth it at this price? That’s steep for 5 days.
Honest answer: it’s the most expensive 5 days I’ve done in the Himalayas, and also among the most memorable. If the budget is tight, the overland route via Phuentsholing (my other Bhutan trip) cuts flight costs massively — same country, half the entry price.
Did you need a guide for Tiger’s Nest specifically?
For the hike itself, no — the trail is obvious and busy. We hired our guide for a day covering the dzongs and sights around Paro/Thimphu where guiding rules apply. Your guesthouse can arrange one.
