I landed in Srinagar with one free day and zero plans. A houseboat owner’s son told me Doodhpathri was where locals go when Gulmarg gets too crowded — the “valley of milk”, about 45 km away. I was at the Magam bus by 7:30 the next morning, half asleep, clutching a paper bag of bakery biscuits.
The shared sumo climbed past Khan Sahib with pine forests closing in, and then the meadows simply opened up — rolling green grass, the Shaliganga stream running milky-white over the rocks, a few shepherd huts in the distance. I walked for three hours and barely saw another tourist. Lunch was my packed sandwiches on a rock by the stream, feet dipped in the freezing water, and honestly it beat most restaurant meals I’ve had.
I was back in Srinagar by 7 pm, sunburnt and dusty. The whole day cost less than one fancy dinner on the boulevard. On the sumo ride back, the two students I’d met that morning shared their leftover noon chai and made me promise to return in autumn, when the grass turns gold. I promised easily — some places you visit, and some you quietly adopt. Doodhpathri has no ticket counters or viewpoints with railings — it’s just a meadow, and that is exactly the point.
