Kurukshetra is the town from the Mahabharata — the actual battlefield of the Gita — and I went mostly out of curiosity about how a place carries 5,000 years of story. The MEMU rolled in just before 10, and the December light was already doing that golden winter thing over the fields.
Brahma Sarovar is enormous — a vast rectangular tank with a small island temple in the middle, reached by a bridge. A group of schoolchildren was feeding the fish, an old man was doing his morning prayers, and the whole place had this unhurried, lived-in holiness that big famous temples sometimes lose. I sat on the ghat steps for a long time doing nothing, which felt like the correct activity.
The Panorama & Science Centre surprised me most. I expected a dusty museum; instead there was a genuinely good Mahabharata panorama show and a science gallery my inner nerd loved. My rickshaw puller, Ramesh, doubled as a guide — pointing out which ghat was which, where the evening aarti happens, which dhaba gives extra ghee on the roti. He refused a tip at the end, saying the ride itself was his pleasure, and somehow that summed up the whole town. I was back in Delhi by 9 pm, ₹1,300 lighter and weirdly moved.

Take the MEMU — at ~₹35 each way it’s absurdly cheap, and it gets you there by mid-morning. A day-hire cycle-rickshaw beats 4–5 separate auto rides.

What actually saved money? The ₹35 train fare. My biggest single expense was lunch. What wasn’t worth saving money on? Nothing here was expensive enough to stress about — but the science centre entry was worth every rupee. Biggest mistake? Not checking the panorama show timings — I caught the last show by 10 minutes of luck. Biggest surprise? How moving Brahma Sarovar was at sunrise-hour light, and how good the science centre was. Would I do this route again? Yes — ideally during the Gita Jayanti festival week in winter, when the town is decorated and buzzing.

- Panorama show runs at fixed slots; ask at the ticket counter first, plan the sarovars around it.

- Most sights cluster within 5 km; you don’t need a taxi at all.

Can this be done as a half-day trip?
Tight but possible if you take an early train and skip the science centre. I’d still recommend the full day — the sarovars deserve slow time.
Is there good vegetarian food around, being a pilgrim town?
Absolutely — dhabas near the station and Brahma Sarovar serve fresh, cheap veg thalis. I paid ₹120 for a full lunch.
