Lansdowne is what hill stations were before they became brands — no mall-road chaos, no traffic jams of selfie sticks, just pine forests and a cantonment town that goes quiet by 9 pm. The shared jeep from Kotdwar climbed through sal forest as the air turned cool, and by the time we rolled into town, Delhi felt like a rumour.
I spent day one walking: up to Tip-in-Top for the Himalayan panorama (Trishul and Nanda Devi were out that morning, sharp as cut glass), down to Bhulla Tal where I rented a paddle boat for ₹100 and scared exactly one duck, and through the Garhwal Rifles regimental museum, which is far more interesting than the name suggests. Day two I did the long forest walk to Tarkeshwar Mahadev — 12 km of deodar shade, barely another soul, and a temple at the end that felt discovered rather than visited.
October was perfect: clear skies, cool nights, and empty trails. I sat on a Mall Road bench at dusk watching the mist roll up the valley and thought about how the famous hill stations could learn from this one’s restraint.
