Palolem had been on my list for two years, and my husband and I finally went this January. The train ride was long — Delhi to Madgaon takes the better part of a day and night — but sleeper berths are honestly fine if you carry your own sheet and some snacks. We reached Madgaon in the morning, caught a local bus, and by afternoon we were sitting on Palolem’s soft white sand.
Our room was nothing fancy, but the door opened straight onto a coconut grove and we could hear the sea. Mornings were for long walks to the quieter north end of the beach, afternoons for reading in a shack, evenings for the sunset. We spent one day doing nothing but watching the fishing boats come in. That was the whole plan, and it worked.
The biggest lesson was that Goa doesn’t have to be expensive. The moment you step off the main tourist strip, prices drop by half. We ate our best meal — a fish curry rice for ₹180 — at a tiny joint behind the market that had no signboard at all. We also learned to carry our own water bottles — the shacks charge ₹60 for what costs ₹20 at the market shop. Three days felt too short; next time we’d stay a full week and properly settle into the slow beach rhythm.

January is peak season, but midweek rooms were ₹200–₹300 cheaper per night than weekend rates. Also, the shacks at the far north end of Palolem charge noticeably less than the ones near the main entrance.

What actually saved money? The sleeper train. Both ways, it was under ₹1,700 total for two people — flights would have tripled the budget.
What wasn’t worth saving money on? The room. We tried one ₹500 room first and moved out in an hour — damp, dark, noisy. The ₹800 room was a different world.
Biggest mistake? Not carrying enough cash. The ATMs in Palolem ran dry twice, and the nearest working one was in Canacona.
Biggest surprise? How walkable everything was. I had budgeted for taxis, but we didn’t take a single one.
Would I do this route again? Yes — but next time in November or February, when the crowds thin out a little.

Is the sleeper train to Goa really okay for a couple? How is safety at night?
It was fine for us — we took the upper berths, chained our bags, and slept in turns on the first night. By the second leg we were comfortable. Carry a small lock and you’ll be fine.
Did you book the Palolem room in advance or on arrival?
On arrival, in January. We checked three places before picking one. If you go in December end, book ahead — New Year week fills up fast.
