articleMy Experience
Puri is the easiest trip we’ve ever taken as a family — barely 60 km from Bhubaneswar, and the train drops you right in town. We went in May, which is hot, I’ll be honest, but the mornings and evenings were lovely and the temple visit made it worth it.
The Jagannath Temple darshan was the heart of the trip. We joined the queue at 7 am and were inside within an hour. The temple kitchen — said to be the largest in the world — serves the abhada meal to thousands every day, and eating that simple rice and dal sitting on the temple floor was genuinely moving. My mother still talks about it. The scale of the kitchen is hard to believe until you see the rows of clay pots and the steam rising in the morning light.
The evening on the beach balanced the spiritual morning perfectly. Puri beach at sunset is lively — families, vendors selling roasted corn, kids flying kites. We just sat on the sand and watched the light change. Two days, one temple, one beach, and we came home feeling like we’d been away for a week. My daughter has already asked when we’re going back — I think we’ve started a family tradition.

lightbulbMoney Saver
The train is almost comically cheap — the whole family travelled for ₹300. And the temple’s abhada meal at Anand Bazaar is both a spiritual experience and the best-value filling lunch in town.

What actually saved money? The short distance. At 60 km, this is the rare trip where transport costs almost nothing.
What wasn’t worth saving money on? The hotel location. We paid slightly more to stay near the beach instead of the budget option near the station, and the evening walks were worth every rupee.
Biggest mistake? Going to the temple at midday on day one. May heat + stone floors = uncomfortable. Morning darshan is the only way in summer.
Biggest surprise? How much my kids loved the temple kitchen visit. I expected them to be bored; they were fascinated.
Would I do this route again? Every year, honestly. It’s our easiest family getaway.
tips_and_updatesWhat I Wish I Knew
- Non-Hindus aren’t allowed inside the main temple sanctum — check the rules before visiting with mixed groups.
- The abhada meal is served at Anand Bazaar inside the temple complex; go before 1 pm.
- May afternoons are brutally hot — plan temple for morning, beach for evening, rest at noon.
- Carry a cap and water; the queue area has limited shade.

How crowded is the temple on weekends? Should we go on a weekday?
Weekends and festival days get very crowded — we went on a Saturday morning and waited about an hour. A weekday morning would be much calmer if you can manage it.
Is the abhada meal suitable for kids? Is it very spicy?
It’s mild — simple rice, dal, and vegetable curries cooked without onion-garlic. My kids ate happily. Just note it’s served on the floor in the traditional way.
