navigationHow I Did It

  • check_circleMy partner and I took a shared jeep from Siliguri to Darjeeling (~₹300/seat, 3.5 hrs) instead of a private cab (~₹2,500+).
  • check_circleStayed 2 nights in a cozy budget hotel 10 minutes below the Mall (~₹1,200/night — booked directly by phone for a better rate).
  • check_circlePre-booked the diesel toy-train joyride for two (~₹630 × 2) on IRCTC.
  • check_circleDid Tiger Hill sunrise via the hotel’s shared jeep arrangement (~₹350/person) and otherwise explored entirely on foot.

articleMy Experience

We’d been talking about a “proper” Darjeeling trip for years — toy train, sunrise, the works — and finally did it without the fancy price tag. The shared jeep up was bumpy and wonderful; my partner got the window seat and I got the photos.

Our hotel was the find of the trip: ₹1,200 a night, ten minutes below the Mall, with a valley-facing balcony. February meant crisp, crowd-free days — we had the Batasia Loop viewpoint nearly to ourselves when the joyride paused there.

Two hours of chugging to Ghum, schoolkids waving at every crossing — my partner, who claims to hate “touristy things,” grinned the whole way. Tiger Hill at 4 AM was brutal but the sky delivered. Total for two, three days: under ₹8,000. Darjeeling on a budget isn’t a compromise — it’s just Darjeeling.

Pro Money Saver

Call the hotel directly instead of booking through an app. We got ₹1,200/night on the phone vs ₹1,600 listed online — and the owner threw in the Tiger Hill shared-jeep arrangement. Small hotels in Darjeeling still work on relationships, not algorithms.

verified_userReality Check

savingsWhat actually saved money?

Shared jeep both ways (₹600 vs ₹5,000+ private) and a hotel slightly off the Mall instead of on it.

savingsWhat wasn’t worth saving money on?

Skipping the joyride to “save” ₹1,260 — we almost did, and it would’ve been the biggest regret of the trip.

warningBiggest mistake?

Not carrying enough warm layers for Tiger Hill. We bought overpriced shawls at 4 AM from a vendor who clearly waits for people like us every morning.

sentiment_very_satisfiedBiggest surprise?

How walkable Darjeeling is. We didn’t need any local transport for two full days.

replayWould I do this route again?

Yes — next time in spring for the flowers along the toy train track.

tips_and_updatesWhat I Wish I Knew

  • February is low season: hotels are cheaper and negotiable, but carry serious warm clothes.
  • The diesel joyride (~₹630) vs steam (~₹1,100+): same route, same views — diesel is the budget pick.
  • Hotel-arranged shared jeeps for Tiger Hill are usually fairly priced (~₹300–400/person); street touts charge more.
  • ATMs near the Mall work fine, but keep cash for jeeps and small eateries.

Is 3 days enough for Darjeeling as a couple?

WFounder Author

For the classic Darjeeling (toy train, Tiger Hill, Mall, HMI) — yes, 3 days is the sweet spot. Add a fourth only if you want a slow day or a tea-garden walk.

How cold is February really? We’re planning the same trip.

WFounder Author

Days are pleasant (10–12°C) but Tiger Hill at 4 AM was around 1–2°C with wind. Carry one genuinely warm jacket each, plus gloves — we learned the hard way.
