There’s no Delhi–Kathmandu train, whatever the rumours say — the Raxaul–Kathmandu railway is still just a proposal. The real route is train + border + bus, and honestly it’s part of the adventure.
The Vaishali Express reached Gorakhpur by 9:30 AM. I ignored the touts selling “through tickets to Kathmandu” at inflated prices — a documented scam — and took the ordinary local bus to Sunauli (₹130). Three hours of Terai flatland, then the border: walking across on foot with just a passport check felt surreal.
On the Nepal side I exchanged money (₹1 = NPR 1.6 at border booths — better than the Indian side), bought an Ncell tourist SIM (~NPR 550), and had momos while waiting for the 8 PM night bus. The VIP sofa seater was surprisingly comfortable.
One critical thing: I watched a fellow traveler discover his wallet of ₹500 notes was useless in Nepal. Carry ₹100s and below, or exchange before you need to spend.

- Indian roaming dies at the border — get the Nepal SIM immediately.

Is Aadhaar really not accepted at the border? I don’t have a passport.
Take your voter ID — that’s officially accepted for Indians. Aadhaar is frequently refused at land crossings, so don’t rely on it. Passport is the safest option if you have one.
How safe is the night bus for a solo woman?
I met two solo women travelers on my bus who were fine, but I’d pick the VIP sofa bus (not the cheapest local), sit near the front, and keep valuables on you. The morning tourist buses are the most social option if you can spare the day.
