navigationHow I Did It

  • check_circleHRTC Himsuta Volvo both ways (~₹1,600 per person per leg) — we skipped the private-taxi idea and saved ~₹8,000.
  • check_circleMid-range hotel on Hadimba Road (~₹3,000/night) — 5 minutes’ walk to Mall Road, quieter, with an actual valley view.
  • check_circleLocal taxi for three days: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel–Sissu, and a lazy Naggar–Jana waterfall day (~₹3,000/day, fixed at the stand before leaving).
  • check_circleOne buffer day with no plan — which paragliding promptly claimed, since it only flies when the wind agrees.

articleMy Experience

November was the sweet spot — clear skies, snow on the ridges, prices well below summer madness. Our Hadimba Road hotel was our best call: quiet nights, valley lights from our window.

Solang day started early. We fixed the taxi rate at the Mall Road stand — ₹3,000 for the day, in writing on the receipt. The high paragliding fly (~₹2,500 each) was the highlight: ten minutes of silence over the valley. Sissu the next day was our favourite — Atal Tunnel drive, snow walls on both sides, hot maggi at a dhaba with nobody rushing us. No permit, no quota, no 7 am queue like Rohtang.

We skipped Rohtang entirely. The permit quota (1,200 vehicles a day) fills fast — a logistical boss fight we didn’t need. Sissu gave us the snow day without the stress. Evenings were Mall Road strolls and one café dinner in Old Manali (~₹1,200 for two) we still talk about.

Volvo over private taxi saved us ~₹8,000 upfront — two Himsuta round trips cost less than one private sedan round trip, and we slept through the journey anyway. Hadimba Road hotels ran ~₹1,000/night cheaper than identical Mall Road ones, with better views.

verified_userReality Check

savingsWhat actually saved money?

HRTC Volvos over a private taxi, and Hadimba Road over Mall Road hotels.

savingsWhat wasn’t worth saving on?

The taxi days — a good driver who knew the Sissu dhabas beat the cheapest quote.

warningBiggest mistake?

Not pre-booking the return Volvo. November was fine, but Manali→Delhi evening buses sell out in peak season — we got lucky.

sentiment_very_satisfiedBiggest surprise?

Skipping Rohtang felt like a loss for exactly one day; then Sissu made us forget it existed.

savingsWould we do it again?

Yes — same hotel, same driver.

tips_and_updatesWhat I Wish I Knew

  • Paragliding is 100% weather-dependent — keep a buffer day or you’ll be negotiating with the wind.
  • Rohtang permits need booking 1–2 days ahead; closed Tuesdays; the quota fills on weekends.
  • Start the Solang/Rohtang day by 7 am — Gulaba checkpoint queues build fast.
  • Hadimba Road hotels give Mall Road access without Mall Road noise.
  • November evenings drop near zero — pack one more warm layer than you think.

Did you miss not going to Rohtang? Everyone says it is a must-do.

WFounder Author

We thought we would. But Sissu via the Atal Tunnel gave us snow, fewer crowds, zero permit stress. Rohtang on your bucket list? Go for it — book the permit 1–2 days ahead, avoid Tuesdays.

How did you find a reliable taxi driver?

WFounder Author

We fixed the rate at the Mall Road taxi stand — ₹3,000 for the full day, written on the receipt. Ask your hotel for a driver reference; ours came recommended.
