navigationHow I Did It

  • check_circleSelf-drive circuit: Delhi → Kaza via Shimla–Kinnaur in, back via Chandratal–Manali. ~1,800 km, 9 days.
  • check_circleEverything split 4 ways — fuel (~₹11,000 for the SUV), homestays, Kaza taxi loops. Transport is ~45% of a Spiti budget; the split is the game.
  • check_circleHomestays (~₹500–700/night per person, twin sharing), one Key monastery dorm night (~₹250 with food).
  • check_circleFull-trip cash from Delhi; 1 buffer day — a landslide near Chicham Bridge used it up.

articleMy Experience

Spiti doesn’t ease you in — it gets more unreal until your brain accepts it. Enter via Shimla–Kinnaur: the road climbs gradually, Sangla gives you green before the desert, and at Tabo’s thousand-year-old monastery, altitude stops being abstract.

Kaza at 3,800 m demanded respect: rest on arrival — no heroics — and none of us got sick. The day loops are the core: Key monastery in the morning light, Kibber’s impossible fields, the Chicham bridge, Langza’s Buddha, Komic (one of the world’s highest villages), Hikkim’s post office — postcard mailed for the story.

Chandratal was the emotional peak — the lake really is that blue, and the camp night at 4,270 m was the coldest I’ve been while completely happy. Get the free Chandratal e-permit (eaagman.hp.gov.in) in Kaza — no internet at Batal. Landslide buffer day: a few hours by a BRO clearing crew, some chai, a story. Build the buffer — everyone needs it.

Pro Money Saver

Go with 4–6: fuel, SUV, and every taxi loop split 4 ways — my transport was under ₹5,000 per person for 1,800 km. A couple in a private cab pays ₹30,000–45,000. The group is the strategy.

verified_userReality Check

savingsWhat actually saved money?

Four-way splits on fuel and stays, homestays over hotels, dhaba thalis (~₹150) over restaurants.

savingsWhat wasn’t worth saving on?

The buffer day fund — a landslide became an anecdote instead of a crisis.

warningBiggest mistake?

Almost skipping the fuel top-up at Reckong Peo. There’s nothing between Reckong Peo and Kaza; altitude murders mileage (30–40% worse).

sentiment_very_satisfiedBiggest surprise?

How cheap the food was — transport and stays take the money; eating barely matters.

savingsWould I do it again?

Yes — same direction (Shimla in, Manali out). Reversing it is the classic altitude-sickness mistake.

tips_and_updatesWhat I Wish I Knew

  • Shimla–Kinnaur in, Manali out — the road is the acclimatization plan. Manali → Kaza straight is asking for AMS.
  • Carry full-trip cash. Kaza’s ATMs run dry; digital payments die with the network. BSNL postpaid has the widest coverage.
  • Fuel stops: Narkanda, Rampur, Reckong Peo, Kaza. Memorize them.
  • Atal Tunnel needs only the ~₹50 congestion charge — the ~₹550 Rohtang permit applies only for Rohtang itself.
  • July–August: peak pricing (+20–40%), monsoon closures — buffer days are non-negotiable.

Is 9 days enough, or is this rushed?

WFounder Author

9 days was right — 2 in, 3 Kaza, 1 Chandratal, 2 back. 7 is the minimum (feels rushed); 10–11 with two buffer days is relaxed.

SASana

Can this be done by public transport?

WFounder Author

Yes — HRTC Delhi → Shimla → Reckong Peo → Kaza (~₹1,800–2,200), leanest bus budgets ₹13,000–18,000 per person. Kaza shared taxis cover the loops. No ILP for Indians (foreigners need one); the Chandratal e-permit is free but mandatory.
